Operation Safe Driver Week is a nationwide safety enforcement and education campaign aimed at reducing risky driving behaviors among both commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and passenger vehicle drivers.
This annual initiative is led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) in partnership with law enforcement agencies across North America. The goal? To improve roadway safety through a mix of traffic enforcement, driver education, and direct engagement with drivers behind the wheel.
What to Expect
From July 13–19, 2025, law enforcement officers will be actively watching for high-risk driving behaviors, including:
Speeding
Distracted driving
Following too closely
Improper lane changes
Seat belt violations
Driving under the influence
Drivers caught engaging in unsafe behaviors can expect to be pulled over and issued a warning or citation.
Why This Matters
Enforcement and education campaigns like this save lives. Studies show that interactions with law enforcement during initiatives like Operation Safe Driver Week reduce dangerous driving behaviors and improve awareness for all motorists.
The Data Is Clear
Speeding has contributed to more than 25% of all crash deaths since 2008.
In 2018, speeding was a factor in 26% of all traffic fatalities, killing 9,378 people—that’s more than 25 lives lost every day.
Distracted driving claimed 3,142 lives in 2019 alone.
In 2019, nearly half (47%) of all passenger vehicle occupants killed weren’t wearing a seat belt.
Drunk driving continues to be a major issue—28 people die each day in the U.S. from alcohol-impaired crashes.
What Carriers and Drivers Can Do
For motor carriers and commercial drivers, this is the time to:
✅ Reinforce safe driving policies with your team✅ Conduct driver training refreshers focused on speed management, distraction, and defensive driving✅ Emphasize seat belt use, fatigue awareness, and proper following distances✅ Review hours-of-service compliance and ensure all driver credentials are up to date
